The name itself could be from the Celtic name Tarsa, meaning 'hill by the river'. In the 13th century, on the site of the former Tarsatica, the town of Reka (today's Rijeka) developed with towers, shops and streets, which belonged to the Habsburgs from 1466 with minor interruptions until 1918. Today's Trsat stretches from the old town of Trsat (Gradina) to the former barracks (today's university campus) and to Strmica to the north.
