During the 2nd century BC, the Roman castrum was built on a small peninsula, which was 400 m long and 200 m wide, and on which the core of the old city stands today. During the reign of Emperor Augustus in the 1st century, the castrum was officially declared a city and included in the Roman colony Colonia Iulia Parentium. In Roman times, Poreč got its first walls, the whole city was walled except for the western side, i.e. the tip of the peninsula, where the temple of Neptune or Jupiter was located. In the 3rd century, the city already had an organized Christian community and an early Christian church complex. The Christian community almost completely disappeared during the reign of Emperor Diocletian, when the Poreč martyrs St. Mauro and St. Eleutheria. St. According to legend, Eleutherije was tied to a stone and thrown into the sea in Peškera bay. Today, right next to the bay, there is a small church of St. Eleutheria from the 15th century.
