Mrkopalj is a small mountain village and the center of a municipality in the Primorje-Gorski Kotar County in Croatia. It is located on the western slopes of Velika Kapela in Gorski kotar at about 800 meters above sea level. The municipality of Mrkopalj also includes the settlements of Begovo Razdolje, Brestova Draga, Sunger, Tuk Mrkopaljski and Tuk Vojni. The settlement was first mentioned in the 15th century and from that time there are archaeological remains of a small medieval church. In the 18th century, the Karolinska cesta, which connected Karlovac with Kraljevica and Rijeka, passed through the place. Then Mrkopalj became a privileged royal city or trading center by the charter of Emperor Franjo Josip II and developed rapidly. At the beginning of the 20th century, skiing courses were organized here, and the first Croatian championship in cross-country skiing and ski jumping was held here, so it is rightly called the cradle of skiing in Croatia. Today, Mrkopalj is a true paradise for recreationists and athletes, and lovers of untouched nature, and in addition to mountain tourism, the locals are engaged in forestry and agriculture.
