Some count it among the seven forts of Liburna (septem turres) of Roman Liburnia, which proves that it is considered an old city. The old town of Hreljin was located in the area of today's Gradina. It was surrounded by walls with two towers, and had two entrances. At the north-west and south-west ends stood a defensive tower with a circular plan. The tower facing the Bay of Bakar enclosed a small castle with a defensive wall and a smaller quadrangular tower, probably the oldest part of the fortified settlement. At the highest point of the hill was a fortress, the remains of which are still well preserved today.
